Immunomodulating effects of intravenous immunoglobulin in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.

چکیده
Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) therapy is increasingly used for its immunomodulating properties in a wide range of pathological conditions including autoimmune diseases, systemic inflammatory diseases and allotransplantation. Intravenous immunoglobulins are obtained from a pool of several thousand healthy blood donors. They are composed of intact IgG with a distribution of subclasses corresponding to that of normal serum and a half life of three weeks. IVIg represent a wide spectrum of natural and induced antibody activities which are present in normal human serum, including antibodies directed against external antigens, autoantibodies and antiidiotypes.' This review will focus on the mechanisms by which infusion of normal human polyspecific IgG may be beneficial in patients with autoimmune disorders.

Uses of intravenous immunoglobulin
Adjuvant high dose IVIgs are being used increasingly in a range of immune-mediated and auto-immune diseases. Although numerous immunomodulatory mechanisms have been suggested, the exact mechanisms of action are poorly understood. The efficacy of IVIg in certain diseases has been proven in clinical trials, in so far as IVIg is approved as the therapy of choice for Kawasaki syndrome and idiopathi...
متن کاملAdverse reactions associated with intravenous immunoglobulin therapy in patients with dermatologic diseases: An 11-year retrospective study
Background: Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is used to treat many autoimmune and immunodeficiency disorders. The main indications of IVIG in dermatology include treatment for resistant autoimmune bullous diseases, Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). Although generally welltolerated, various adverse effects can occur. Methods: We designed a retrospective study ...
متن کاملClinical Application and Functional Mechanisms of Intravenous Immunoglobulin: an Overview
Previous, Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG) has been used for treatment of patients with immunodeficiency. However, recent studies have shown that IVIG is a suitable approach for treatment of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Although the exact mechanism of IVIG action is not well known, recent findings have demonstrated that IVIG impacts on expression and function of FC receptors of immuno...
متن کاملINTRAVENOUS IMMUNOGLOBULIN (IVIg) IN AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES – EXPANDING INDICATIONS AND INCREASING SPECIFICITY
Even though intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) was originally used for the correction of immunodeficiency states, in the recent years it is also used as an immunomodulating agent in several autoimmune diseases. The indications for IVIg use in autoimmunity progressively expand and might include for example systemic lupus erythematosus, autoimmune vasculitides, and antiphospholipid syndrome. Howev...
متن کاملIntravenous immunoglobulin: properties, mode of action and practical use in dermatology.
Since they were first administered to patients with antibody deficiency disorders over 50 years ago, human intravenous immunoglobulin preparations have been used successfully to treat a rapidly increasing number of autoimmune and inflammatory disorders, among which are a series of cutaneous autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. These include dermatomyositis, Kawasaki's disease, a number of auto...
